The authorities in Costa Rica are investigating the seizure of more than one ton of ganja believed to have originated from Jamaica.
According to a report carried in a Costa Rican newspaper yesterday law enforcement personnel and the US Coast Guard seized two thousand kilograms or one-point-one tons of ganja that was apparently brought from Jamaica in a speedboat.
The operation was carried out last Tuesday 112 miles off the coast of Costa Rica.
It’s reported that three Costa Ricans and three Nicaraguans who were on the boat threw the weed overboard and then tried to escape law enforcement authorities.
Costa Rican Air Surveillance Service and Coast Guard informed a U.S Coast Guard vessel which joined the pursuit of the boat which lasted for several hours.
The speedboat’s crew was captured by the Costa Rican Coast Guard and the floating packets of ganja collected by the U.S vessel, which turned them over to Costa Rica in accordance with the joint high seas anti-drug monitoring agreement.
A U.S vessel arrived in Costa Rica on Saturday with the ganja.
Costa Rica’s Security Ministry called the operation a heavy blow to international drug trafficking.
