Murders in Malvern St Elizabeth leave district speechless!

The lush, sleepy rural district of Malvern, and its adjoining communities in St Elizabeth were rocked and shocked into a new awakening yesterday with two violent incidents occurring just hours apart.

Pandemonium broke out yesterday afternoon at the Malvern Police Station in St Elizabeth when a man, reportedly of unsound mind, entered the station, surprised police personnel there, disarmed and shot female District Constable Nadine Mills.

DC Mills, who remains hospitalised, received gunshot injuries to her mid-section.

Her attacker fled the station with her gun before other police personnel realised what had occurred. The injured constable raised an alarm, and soon her colleagues, led by a sergeant of police from the station, came to her rescue.

They pursued the assailant and cornered him some distance away. According to the police, a shoot-out ensued and he was shot in the incident and disarmed. He later died at hospital.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Derrick Cochrane said it was very unfortunate what happened to Mills and hope that she recovers from her injuries The incident, which left police personnel at the station in shock, came only hours after the community woke up to the news that Sonia Martin, a resident of the neighbouring Potsdam district, was hacked to death in her sleep allegedly by her common-law husband.

Reports are that the two had been having a domestic dispute and she was chopped to death, even as she slept with her two children next to her.

The search for the perpetrator of that incident continues.
